Ruth 1:16-17

Memorizing and Meditating on Scripture is one of the most important spiritual discipline's God has made available to us. We want you so filled immersed in Scripture that when life cuts you, what you bleed is the Word of God. Check out this devotional from Rebecca Hing to help you toward this goal.

16 But Ruth replied, “Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. 17 Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord deal with me, be it ever so severely, if even death separates you and me.”

- Ruth 1:16-17

A co-worker of mine recently said her Farewell after working with our non-profit organization for several years. Although her presence as a coworker and leadership as a department director will surely be missed, we all agreed that her new job was well deserved and a God-send for her.

This coworker has never been one to complain out loud about her struggles, and at her age and the field she works in, trust me, she’s got a lot of reasons to complain. Her faithfulness to her work went far beyond what was required of her. Even the extent to which she cared for her clients would sometimes go as far as taking out money from her own pocket.

Much like my coworker, Ruth chose to go far above and beyond what was expected of her as a daughter-in-law. She chose to share the burdens that Naomi carried as a widow and followed her into a foreign land, leaving behind her own family, religion, and way of life (Ruth 1:16-17).

If we were to apply the kind of faithfulness that Ruth showed in our own lives, just think of what our personal relationships would be like. For one, the common dread that follows the words “in-laws” would definitely meet its end!

But more importantly, consider also the blessings that came about because of Ruth’s faithfulness (Ruth 4:13-17). Despite all the struggles that we might face in our day to day lives, God is still at work and He is always faithful in redeeming us in His perfect timing.  As Hebrews 10:23 states, “Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.”

But Ruth replied, “Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord deal with me, be it ever so severely, if even death separates you and me.”
